Head Coach
John Murphy

Coach John Murphy, who describes himself as a student of the sport of swimming, has had an illustrious swimming career and has an extensive coaching background. John was a member of the 1970 National High School Championship Team at Hinsdale High School in Illinois. At Indiana University, he was a member of two NCAA championship teams.

John was a member of the 1972 Olympic Team, earning a gold medal (and World Record) as a member of the 4x100 freestyle relay along with Mark Spitz, David Edgar, and Jerry Heidenreich. In addition, John earned an individual bronze medal for his 100m backstroke in the same Games.

John began coaching in Santa Fe in the mid-1980s and for five summers was an assistant coach for Tom Jager's Gold Medal Swim Camps. John has coached both club and high school swim teams, and has been a private swim coach since 1990. Most recently, John had six very successful years as the head coach for the Santa Fe Blue Sharks, which merged with LOBO Swim Team in 2011.

Coach
Maribeth Englert

Maribeth grew up in Lakewood, NY, where she swam from the time she could finally dive in and her hair would no longer stay dry.  (It’s true!)  She swam for both for the local YMCA and High School.  After graduating High School, she spent a year as an exchange student in Japan, and then went on to the University of Florida for undergraduate school.  She has her Masters from the University of Notre Dame.

Maribeth taught high school and was the principal of an elementary school before deciding to stay home and raise her two children, Michael and Onnolee.  After moving to Los Alamos in 1999, there were no more excuses for not getting back into the water since we have such a gorgeous facility in the Walkup Center.  She has been swimming with the Aquatomics ever since.  She began coaching in 2008.

Maribeth still swims almost every day and has taken to training for Open Water Swims.  She has completed an 11.5K swim, while winning the National Title for her age group in the 3K.  She also swam in the National Championship 10K race in South Carolina in the summer of 2008.

Her goal as a coach is to give every swimmer a solid foundation in stroke technique.  She loves working with the kids and hopes everyone learns to enjoy swimming as a member of the team.  As the swimmers move up in groups, Maribeth hopes that they see swimming as a fun lifelong sport.

She has coached both age-group and Masters swimming, and has worked as a swim official. She has worked with swimming media both at NCAA's and at the 2000 Olympics. After a career in high-tech, she is enjoying time raising her two boys. As a WSI-certified instructor and USA Swimming-certified coach, she hopes to share her love for swimming with her students.
